On the one hand I love my Kindle 1... I use it everyday, I subscribe to my favorite newspaper, I mark up my books with annotations, highlights and bookmarks.
On the other hand my Kindle 1 annoys me... unintended page changes, the awkward way I sometimes have to hold it to keep from hitting buttons, the sometimes slow page refresh, and the screen freezes that now has me traveling with a paper clip lest I need to do a reset while commuting on the train.
I've had the Kindle 2 in my hands for almost a day and have carried it on one commute. What follows is my "first impressions" review of the Kindle 2 from the perspective of an owner of the original K1. What's different, what's better and what's worse?
5 big things I immediately noticed as different: Read the rest of this entry...

The Kindle DX is part of the large screened eBook Reader market and was released in June 2009.
Cool Kindle Features
Cool features include the auto-rotation of the screen, full document zoom capability, built in PDF reader, 5 way joystick controller.
The large screen is 2.5 times bigger than the Kindle 2. This is done by minimizing the space usage of the keyboard. The resolution of the DX: 1200x824, where as the Kindle 2: 600x800. See Amazon Kindle, 2 and DX comparisons.
It has a basic web browser which they say is good for text-centric websites such checking your webmail on the go.
Storage Space
The memory storage has been beefed up from the Kindle 2's 2GB to 4GB allowing you to store approx 3,500 eBooks. The bad thing is there are no memory expansion slots for SD cards and the like.
Battery
Two weeks is the time you can read eBooks until the power runs out. This is only if you have the wireless function turned off because when it's on your power is sapped.

Screen
The screen technology utilizes Amazon Kindle's e-paper which has no glare or backlight meaning you can read it anywhere as you would a normal analog book. It is not colour but 16 shades of grey. The refresh rate is 20% faster than the original Kindle.
Cool Audio Features
You can play AAC or MP3 in the background through headphones or the in-built speakers.
Text size can be adjusted to larger or smaller as your vision permits. There is also a read-to-me featuring Stephen Hawking like voices that auto-read to you. Male/female voice can be chosen at various speeds. You can assign this read-to-me to speak cooking recipes in the kitchen or for a pleasant read in the car. Also from Audible.com (Amazon's audio book service) are a collection of 50,000 audiobooks available to buy or rent.
Connectivity & Content
Using the Amazon Whispernet - a free mobile carrier service (3G mobile) that allows you to download ebooks - is free in the United States. The Amazon Kindle has just been released worldwide so check the post to see if your country is good to go!
Wikipedia and a built in dictionary are also available. Each Kindle gets a customized email address to allow you to send an email to anyone at the flat rate of $0.10 US.
Like Apple's iTunes if you download an ebook from the Amazon site it will allow you to re-download it if you lost, corrupted or deleted it. Also, on that note, you can read other media from other sites as the Kindle does not lock you out of non-Amazon eBook formats.
Amazon Accessories
There are plenty of accessories available such as leather covers, cabling, chargers and reading lights.

The Kindle 2 is officially making its way out of the US and into over 100 countries.
According to an Amazon press release:
“We are excited to work with Amazon to help readers access books even faster and from significantly more places than ever before, including more than 100 countries and territories around the world through AT&T’s global wireless coverage.”
The Kindle will cost $279 (international) and $259 (in the US) and will still be the American edition running on AT&T’s international network which therefore means costs to download books over the air will be pricey. That said, you can transfer personal documents to your Kindle via USB for free at anytime.
The Kindle will ship with a U.S. power adapter and a micro-USB cable for charging your Kindle via a computer USB port, so you’ll need to ensure you have an international adaptor to get it working for you. The Kindle currently has over 280,000 English-language books to choose from; plus U.S. and international newspapers and magazines.
Kindle Country listThe kind people over at blogkindle have put together a table that lists every country where Kindle is available along with number of books, their pricing, wireless availability and more.
Here is a quick checklist of the countries where the Kindle is currently not available: Read the rest of this entry...

Amazon Kindle Leather Cover - This is just like the bigger model designed for the DX. It has a black leather cover and a soft, grey suede interior. The cover clips on easily and securely. The Kindle has two small slots on the left side. Two clips on the cover latch into these slots. You can slide the top clip down to unlatch and release the Kindle. All the Kindle controls remain accessible with the cover on.
M-Edge Platform Jacket stock available now
M-edge Platform Jacket for Kindle 2 Designed for Kindle 2 with luxurious, rich pebbled fuchsia 100% genuine leather. The kindle 2 fits into the jacket like a glove. When closed, the soft suede cover lays flat against the kindle, protecting it from any foreign objects coming between the cover and the screen, despite the open sides. The Kindle mounts in 4 leather corner pieces, matched to the exterior color (another nice touch). The two top corners have elastic edges, which gives a snug fit while being easy to insert or remove and holds the Kindle securely. The feature I really like is the way it stands up for hands-free reading.
